Modality was recorded in the coronavirus pandemic lockdown and reflects the impact of this disease across the global spectrum of societies and cultures – once again exposing how our most vulnerable and deprived individuals and communities suffer most, and how self-interested political
leaders exploit mass fear and uncertainty to create divisions and breed hate to serve their own ends.
“This world-wide crisis highlights that our systems are broken and failing the vast majority of people, the unsustainable machinery of capitalism and greed is not working for humanity, and we need to change. Outside Broadcast signals a new age of harmony, science and love…a new hope and a new way.
Outside Broadcast and earlier Blue Rider Music projects often used borrowed samples of vocals and dialogue to support the subtle messaging of the soundscapes being created, drawing on a tradition
established by Faust and Can, through Peter Gabriel and WOMAD, to the likes of Burial and Clams Casino.
Modality took that a step further with vocal sounds representing the wonderful diversity of our world. Languages used on this album in addition to English include French, German, Japanese, Hindi, Romanian, Mongolian and Kirindi tribal languages. But it reminds us that music and visual arts can transcend individual languages…they are our shared human language.
This 'one-world, no-borders’ ethos lives and breathes throughout the album and reminds us that the trials and tribulations of our human experience – whether it’s the disproportionate impact on disadvantaged communities of a virus pandemic or the devastation of climate change – is shared by all humanity.
We want to build a movement of new human enlightenment and work toward a fresh renaissance, using the power of creative arts, in this current self-centred and materialistic capitalistic age of darkness.”
